An American Idol

I can't remember which season I became addicted to American Idol, but it was the season Clay Aiken came in second. We sat enthralled the first part of the season when all the tryouts were going on, and the world was enamoured of Simon Legree...opps, Simon Cowell. All these young people stood in lines for days. Days, I tell you, not hours. They were all sure that they had a shot at that golden ticket (mind you, this is before I knew what the golden ticket was) to Hollywood. Now, couldn't they look around and see the THOUSANDS of people surrounding them and get a smattering of an idea that possibly, just maybe, their ticket was going to be going home, not Hollywood? I don't consider myself a pessimist, but even I at that age, would have looked around at that lot and said to myself, yeah right...and picked myself up and taken myself to the closest train or bus station. So into the room where the three judges, Randy Paula and Simon sit, they rush. Some are nervous but some are so confident that it's an absolute shock when they open their mouths and what sounds like a cross between a braying donkey and croaking frog emerges. Some of these singers (and that's a stretch, calling them singers) are so bad that I can't see how they ever got in the room except for comic relief. Some come in costumed in the most ridiculous outfits that no one could take them seriously if they even had a halfway decent voice. I can't think that they ever thought they had a shot. So, last night they were in my beloved Charleston (South Carolina) and I was shocked at how little talent emerged. I cringed as the "talent pool" paraded in front of the camera and promptly fell flat on their faces. Mediocre doesn't begin to describe it. My cats sound better. But the thing that is so shocking is that the ones that are so, well there's only one word that fits here, bad, are truly shocked that the judges don't sign them to a contract immediately. They swear (and I wish someone would ask them if they kiss their mothers with that mouth) and cry and rant and rave and are still going on about how the judges will be sorry they missed out on their great talent. Really? You know, I can look at this mess and clearly see it. There's a Grandmother at the root of this whole thing. Each and everyone of them had a Grandma who told them "you're a star baby, you go for it." And believed it. If Grandma is such a believer, then it must be so. God help us if the terrorists ever get hold of a grandma for a recruiter. Our goose will be well and truly cooked.

Oh, Sandi....truer words were never spoken!! American Idol is so goofy that I won't miss it, if possible. Talk about entertainment...I LOVE IT ! My hubby, however, is another story all together. He thinks it is the most ignorant show ever thought up. Hahahhaa...i still just love it! And, I am old enuf to know better !! Oh, well....
Grandmothers are a different breed , and that's a fact. Not only do we tell our kids and grandkids that they can DO ANYTHING THEY WANT TO IN THIS WORLD...we truely believe every word of it.
Thanks for a smiling post....
hugs, bj

I do hate to see all the crazy stuff in the beging. It is to show and drag people in. they use alot of those poor people.
You know I told you Rian went to that CMT can you duet? They saw the tape he sent in and ask him to come to Nashville. He took out a loan and took time off of work. Drove from NJ. He had to get inline just like the others. He got in line at 5am and there were already 500 ahead of him. You had to make it through three sets of judges. He made it to the second one and they said congrats to the next level..he goes upstairs to the third judge and the doors are locked!!!! they had taken all they were gonna take. CMT was working with Idol. It showed me it is all for show. Pissed me off to know my son will now make paymenys on something and never had a real chance. They use them like cattle.

Hi Sandi:-).
The only time hubs & I really watch American Idol is just the auditions. Some of these kids are on here for there 15 seconds of fame. But others really and truly believe they have talent!!. Unbelieveable right?. I couldn't believe how little came out of South Carolina last night too. Only 23, and one of them I know of was the little girl close to my neck of the woods in Knoxville, TN and she almost didn't make it. I don't think she'll go far in Hollywood. I wish her best though:-). Well I've rambled enough.
Have a wonderful day!!

I've not watched a full season of Idol since Clay came in second...ticked me off he should have been first in my opinion....

I think that show is getting past it's prime...

Idol is pretty funny to watch, isn't it. We had a girl from here that was on last night. She was that 16-year old, Amy with the dark hair. She gave Simon the abstinence speech.

I've been watching it to Sandi and it funny. I was excited they were in Charleston because it is one of my all time favorite cities too and I'll probably watch the whole season because it is entertaining.

Love American Idol. Love. It. Every season The Hub swears he won't get wrapped up but guess who was watching it with me?? Didn't that brother & sister team that made it through crack you up??

The shots of SC were so pretty. Spent a few days there and just fell in love with it all.

Haven't watched since that year that Clay Aiken came in second. But it sure was fun reading your description! Somebody's gotta make the kids feel special...might as well be grandma! LOL!

I started watching A.I. the first year it was on. Actually, I didn't start watching until it had been on for a week or so...but I kept hearing on the radio about this girl from a small town in Texas who had this incredible voice...so I tuned in...It took me a few shows to figure out who the girl from Texas was...b/c at the time there were 2...1. Nikki Scott? I think and 2. Kelly Clarkson...I loved her from the first minute I saw her sing...not only was she great...but she was from my little ole' home town...so that made it all the better.

I don't watch the pre-lim shows...I just start watching after they pick their 12 or whatever...I don't like the negativity that some of the contestants AND the judges sling at each other...I do have friends that only watch that part of the show... I just wait until there is some talent to watch! I'm not even sure I'll watch it this year...but I probably will...NOW...if it was Dancing with the Stars...you can bet...I wouldn't miss one single minute of that show!

Blessings...
Teresa

I too enjoy American Idol. There are some Real People with lots of confidence. Its scarey to think we never really know how other people see us.... I try not to think about that too much..Off to estate sales. Cats are a cure for everything....Cheers, Lena

It's hard to watch these early rounds but still we find ourself glued in our seats. You're right I suspect they heard "baby you're a star" from someone and took it to the next step. Poor kids.
