The Thanksgiving Challenge Post 18: The Cats have their Say

I call them the Three Stooges...Larry Moe and Curly...Cher is Larry, Hound is Moe and Sonny, a natural born clown, is most definitely Curly. Hound (that's her on the left) is the boss. Cher is the follower (she's in the middle) and of course we all know Sonny. Sonny is the one who wakes us up each morning, and then demands to "make the bed" no later than 8 am. He loves to "help" by going under the sheets and pulling on the quilt then jumping up and down from the head board to the middle. It is the only household chore that makes me glad. These three guys play their hearts out all day and half the night. I once read that cats sleep 18 hours a day. Exactly which 18 hours I haven't been able to put my finger on. But play they will and play they demand.

What they are most grateful for is that they have a loving home and did not end up in the animal shelter. Such a misnomer that is, it's not much of a shelter and more often a death sentence. They are thankful for the electronic mouse with laser light nose. Sonny knows that when you pick it up chase time is about to start. He will look at you, with the mouse in your hand, and the butt starts moving back and forth, ready for action. The game goes on for several minutes, with the three of them fighting for control of the light on the floor. We play it so often that we purchased replacement batteries on e-bay so we didn't break the bank replacing them at WalMart.

They are thankful (especially Hound) for the dust mop. She has jumped on and ridden the dust mop since she was about six weeks old. Hound is the one we found abandoned even before her eyes were opened. I am the only mother she has ever known. Mac, who swears she is insane, says he knows now why she was left on her own. Insane or not, as long as you keep her nails trimmed, it doesn't hurt all that much when she runs up your back to sit on your shoulder. We really should have named her Polly.

Cher, who older son Wallace calls Psycho Kitty, has little oddities of her own. She only wants to be petted on her own terms. She may climb in your lap for affection, but you can never pick her up and place her in your lap. She makes you very grateful when she jumps down if you make the mistake of picking her up. You may reach down and stroke her but make no mistake, if you don't hear a purr, your attention is not appreciated. But back to their Thankful list. Tonight is Wednesday. They eat dry food six days a week. But on Wednesday night, promptly at five, they get tuna. Not cat food tuna, but real honest to gosh Chicken of the Sea tuna. It is mixed in with the dry and makes it taste ever so flavorful (or so they tell me) and they have reached the stage that they know when Wednesday comes. Or else why is it that they meet me in the pantry every Wednesday at 5 pm? For being able to spoil them all a little bit, I can't help but say, God I am truly thankful!

What a post. Our cat has survived the odds. She doesn't like other cats and sometimes, the feeling is mutual. She loved our Golden but we lost her to cancer. Our issue dog thinks the cat is awesome ... but you know .. the cat hasn't really made up her mind. I have some stuff on my sidebar about these guys. I won't tell my cat you're serving tuna. It's one of her favorites. We treat her now and then with tidbits. We break it up and put it in the freezer then giver her a little bit. BUt then she gets demanding about it. Oh well. :) Jenn

Sandi.. There was a comment left on your post about the wringer washer... The comment was :

I remember the wringer washers.... I HAD ONE IN ENGLAND..... I used it for 2 years and washed all my first born son's diapers in it..... that was in 1965...... Then hung them outside on a long line and used a long pole to push that line up to the sun! Great story...

It was me and not Annette.. I was logged into her blog to fix a few things for her and forgot to log out.. ahhahah So when I commented on your post I was under her name.. soooooo just wanted to let you know....... some days I am just a goober...

Sending hugs...

Awh Sandi, your cats remind me of mine. I am down to just two now because I lost three in one year. It was hard on all of us. The cats mourned their deats and would lay beside each cat's grave.

I have a crazy cat as well. She is a real character. My doberman still wants to eat my cats.

I am enjoying reading your thanksgiving post.

I had cats years ago in my mother's. I want a pet for my kids and I've been offered a pair of birds. Well, if I go for them, it will be a long time before I get cats in my life again!

When I had 3 cats, my favourite grey one used to go wild with excitement when I shone a torch on the floor & she used to chase the beam. The other 2 used to just give a look as though to say *She's mad, don't bother us we are sleeping,* However, if I lay on my tummy and shone the torch under the dresser....... all three would race over and try to get things from underneath. Quite often when I retrieved one of their toys from underneath, they would go wild with excitement and want to look for more treasures.
Thanks for that memory!

Wonderful post. I'm sure your kitties are very grateful for their loving home with all the comforts and fun! And you're right - 'shelter' doesn't always mean that, does it?

I'm going to do something I don't normally do, and answer your comment on my blog here. You mentioned that the Dairyland greyhound track in Wisconsin is due to close, and I feel I must tell you this. Here's what I said in answer to your comment:

"Yes, the Dairlyland track is due to close and the greyhound rescues are in a panic as always, trying desperately to save all the dogs who will be out of a job. Estimates vary, but it seems it could be anything between 500 and 900 dogs will hit the adoption groups all at once, in a bad economic climate and just after Christmas. And of course, there are people losing their jobs too.

Whether you are for or against dog racing, it's going to be a bad time. :("

A lot of people only see the bad in greyhound racing and are happy when a track closes, but it's not always the best thing for the dogs, sadly.

Ah, so cute! Perfect post for a cat lover like me. I simply love cats, they are the bets pets. Isn't it fun too that they can be so different from each other.
And yes, Batcat can easily sleep 24h a day, if the conditions are right.;)

Great post, Sandi! Those kitties have a good home with you and they know it. You're lucky! I wish I could get my boys to play as much as yours do. :-)

Have a great Thursday and I'll nudge later.

I LOVE cats...but lo-and-behold, God knew I'd become a crazy old Cat Lady with a dozen....so in His goodness, he made me very allergic to them!

Your kitties are very blessed. How do you restrain yourself from making EVERY nite Wednesday??? (My cats would be fat!)

Sandi..I have 2 kitty brothers and what a delight! Very finicky and almnost opposite personalities...just like human brothers. :) Jake is all lovey and sweet (pet me, scratch me, hold me, I love it) and Woody is completely indifferent (don't pet me, don't scratch me, don't hold me, see if I care).

We love our Rescue Kitties...always a bright spot in our day. :)

Wonderful post of thankfulness for our pets who give us so much pleasure and don't ask for too much in return. All of our pets are rescued and I can tell how appreciative they are every day with their unconditional love.

Ahh, bedmaking with a cat. All the others I have known were like Sonny - they found it to be a huge great game where my fingers were the prey and the various layers just part of the fun.

Not with Zebbycat. When I change the sheets he has a magnificent time sprawling out on each layer. maybe rolling onto his back or maybe just having a very relaxed wash while on Iis side. As I build up each layer I have physically move him over to the other side if I'm to get smooth sheets and quilt/s. Then the Zebby sheepskin, polar fleece and "quilt" go on top, plus hi sfluffy scarves.

Dear Sandi - is just as well I only have the one cat. I'm so thankful for our mutual adoption of each other back in March 2006.

Wishing you happy cooking this weekend and sending much care and love to you,

Michelle and Zebbycat, xxx and Purrrrumbling

Well Luckie will get one chance here soon for some thanksgiving. She is a shelter rescue; after spaying and before we claimed her a heartworm test revealed she had heartworms. We almost sent her back because that seemed to be a death sentence in our books. After 3 days of begging by vet and a discount on treatment, we took her home. She would have been euthanized if sent back to facility with heartworms.
