Earthquakes and local disasters

I woke up this morning wearing a blanket of cats. JJ and Hound were wrapped around my head and Pyewackit and Caroline were clinging to my feet.  BatGirl had long since gone outside but I could hear her mourning her lack of thumbs to get the back door open to get in, so I got up.   I turned on the coffee pot (if you can legitimately call the Keurig machine a coffee pot) grabbed my cup and shooed the furrbies away all the while letting the yowling swearing BatGirl in.  I plopped some cat chow in their bowl and demanded they leave me alone.  Turning on the tv to catch the early news, I sat down with my coffee and had to swat the crazy cats off me yet again.  Mac was getting up, and I heard him telling JJ to get off his feet and leave him alone.  "What in the world is wrong with this kitten?" he was asking as he put his cup under the deliverer of wonderful brew.  "Couldn't say, they have been very clingy even before I got up.  I thought I had an electric blanket on my head, " I told  him.  The news came up and we sipped and watched.

Charlotte had their normal 2 or three shootings, the usual fire or three, the normal amount of burglaries and even mentioned an earthquake in Chesterfield County.  WHAT?!  Seems an earthquake of 2.9 hit our county this morning, causing a bit of a shake up, but nothing thank God of the sort that has hit Japan.  But still, we don't get earthquakes very often.  It's why we don't live in California, after all.  We don't want to live where the house shakes and walls tilt and books fly off shelves.  So now I know why the cats were so spooked.  They were not trying to protect us, I am sure...they wanted to know why we were not up and fleeing the scene.  I'm surprised I didn't find packed luggage by the door.  Of course there would only be Temptations Cat Snacks and Cat Chow inside...but still.  They're pretty smart these furrbies of ours.

Understandably,  I wasn't surprised to hear my home county mentioned on national news.  Unfortunately it's beginning to be a pretty common occurance.  Chesterfield County has been undergoing a barrage of bad press because of some horrendous happenings at our Animal Shelter (tongue in cheek on calling it a shelter) and I will be writing more on the horrible things we have uncovered when SLED is finished with it's investigation of the Sheriff's Office and the officers involved in what can only be called a crime in anyone's book. I want to be able to write without crying.  Well, that's all for now, I'm headed out to plant flowers and enjoy this early summer weather.  I'm beginning  to think there may be something to this 2012 thing since it's only March and we've already had several days of 80+ weather and expect it to hit 84 today.  All in all, it's been a pretty exhausting month one way or the other.  Hope your day is a good one.

For a moment I thought you were waking up under a "blanket of snow" (see what moving to Europe did to me?)! ;-)

I am so sorry to hear about the bad shelter news.

Wishing you only good things from now on,
hugs,
Merisi

There's a point at every post where you have me laughing out loud and this was no exception. Poor little kitties all unsettled and the two of you not paying a lick of attention.

Ohhhh, your story about the animal shelter sounds ominous. I know that when you write it, it will be blistering and worthy of print.

Enjoy this lovely day, Sandi!

Sandi, I can relate to the cats as ours do the same thing to me. One of my cats walks all over me to get me up, then they cry like crazy banshees. They can not wait. First feed the cats their soft food, then let the dogs out, feed the dogs and then if everyone is OK I get to have my cup of coffee. Of course they follow me to my computer. Funny they don't do this to Hubs. I love them dearly though.

I am saddened to hear about your animal shelter. I don't trust people that hurt animals.

Take care and have a wonderful day playing in your flower bed.

We get shaken up out here on a regular basis - and the dog is always the first one to notice. Enjoy your warm weather!

Glad the earthquake was light enough that you were able to sleep through it. Wish the kitties had been able to. Glad no one was hurt in your area and only stress for the poor animals. Makes me wonder how the residences of the animal shelter were this morning. Must have been pretty frantic.

Have fun in the yard, and don't forget that sun hat. :-)

See you online this afternoon.

Love,
Lee

Animals are smarter than some of us give them credit for. I'm glad the earthquake wasn't any worse!!

It's hottern heck here; I worked outside yesterday, and today I'm a slug. :)

Always nice to see that you've posted! Yes, stay safe outside.

Always such a welcome sight on my reader to see you have a new post! Wish you could have been at my house last night though, animal lover that I know you are, as you would have howled laughing at our little dog, Sammy, (a mutt with a lot of bichon (sp) frieze plus a few other breeds) who is a little bit of a guy and he met my son's new dog for the first time. Gemma is part black lab and part great dane so it would probably take 10 Sammies to make one Gemma and any way, he fell madly in love with Gemma. Tried his level best to let her know he was willing and wanting very much to accomodate her shall we say, but the most he could reach -about the knee joint on any of her legs, and he tried valiantly on each one of 'em too! Gotta love 'em, ya know! The cat, Fluffernutter, however took one look inside the dining room and saw the size of that dog and went into hiding immediately!

They say animals 'feel' things we don't so I guess they knew about the quake long before you did. :)

Animals are so intuitive!

Am glad to hear that your animal shelter is under investigation; ours needs to be, but isn't!

They must have heard that and felt it, even though you didn't. Poor little animals.
I'm a bit spooked about what you are hinting at in that *shelter*

I am not sure I can read the Shelter post. Seems like spring is off and on.

We just had to horrendous thunderstorms with sleet/hail.

Dog went nuts. We are have earthquakes from about 90 miles away felt here.

Hope you ae tons better. I'm dealing with atrial fib and will have a procedure--probably May. seems like my social life is medical tests and appointments.

Fascinating. Cats will react to changes in atmosphere, I know that from experience, so I suppose an earthquake would really rile them. Living near Boston my whole life, not too many shakes to test that theory myself, Thank God.

If you watch the animals, they always know ahead of time....being raised on a farm you can watch them and know that they have that 6th sense....... Maybe 2012 is more truth than we think.....

Hey there. I'm back to blogging and had stopped by Mimi's Attic (is that spelled right, it looks wrong?!) Saw your name in a comment. I'm making the rounds very slowly. I shut down off blog and FB. Virtual world won, in regard to FB. I can just see the cats w/their packed bags. Take care. Great to "see" you. Jenn

We don't normally get earthquakes here either Sandi, but I remember we had one in the middle of the night about 3 years ago. The bed shook so hard I had trouble getting out of it and when I did the whole floor was shaking. It was scary. Davy slept right through it and thought I was having a mad fit when I told him what had happened :-)
